Taking an interest

Don’t be surprised if your child comes home after school reluctant to tell you what he/she has been doing all day. Parents often get replies such as ‘nothing much’ or ‘just playing’. Ask but don’t pester. Your child will tell you when he/she is ready.

Comparing your child with others

Please try not to compare your child with other children. Your child is unique. If you are worried about his/her progress discuss your concerns with the class teacher. Together we should be able to agree on ways to help your child. A child with caring parents who show pleasure in sharing their child’s efforts, experiences and achievements will be well rewarded and the child will grow in confidence, enjoy school and learn successfully.

It would be helpful if your child is able to:

· listen attentively (to stories, to instructions from you)

· ask for help

· ask for the toilet and use it unaided

· dress and undress himself/herself

· recognise his/her name in print (capital letter for the first letter, the rest in lower case)

· be able to dry himself/herself (in preparation for swimming)

· use a knife and fork

We will endeavour to give your child a happy start at school. If you have any queries/concerns at all please do not hesitate to contact the class teacher.
