Transition from pre-school/home to school

Transition from home/pre-school to the Reception class is planned sensitively. The children have opportunities to visit the class with parents and with their pre-school/nursery. The class teachers also visit the local pre-schools/nurseries interacting with the children and the staff. The part-time attendance, during the first few weeks of the autumn term, helps the children to settle gradually into school life

Starting School

All children start school part-time. Some will attend mornings only and some will attend afternoons only. This information is given to parents in the May prior to starting school so that working parents have time to make appropriate arrangements. The children are gradually introduced to full time school and, usually after five weeks, all the Reception children are attending full time. However, there may be instances where the class teachers and/or parents may consider that a particular child is not ready.

Our reasons for part-time entry are that school is very different to nursery/pre-school/home as it is a much larger place and there are less adults available to see to the children’s needs. Even if a child has attended nursery/pre-school full time school can appear to be a daunting place. We endeavour to ensure that we provide a smooth, calm transition from pre-school/home.

The following are some hints as to how you can help your child when he/she starts school:

Settling In

Please do not worry if, after all the trouble you have taken to prepare your child for school, he/she cries on the first day. Some children settle in immediately and never cry, some cry on the first day and never again, some cry for several days and some get upset weeks later after apparently settling in well at first. Children are unpredictable! If your child is upset try to remain calm even though you will be feeling upset yourself. Make a firm exit and leave with a smile and a wave. If you are very concerned telephone later to find out how your child has settled. Teachers are used to dealing with children in this situation and can usually settle and comfort children very quickly after their parents have left.
